"Gayle" is Not Hate Speech

I'm banned for hate speech on WyldRyde. Yup. My name, you see, has the word "gay" in it, and thus "gayle" is hate speech.

This happens fairly often as it turns out. I've hit this issue on AOL, Microsoft's theSpoke.com, planes with games on their lcd screens, etc.

I have to wonder though. Suppose my last name were "Straighth", would I be banned as often? Why is "gay" considered hate speech?

(PS: I would check if WyldRyde banned "Straighth", but it's banned my computer completely. Anyone want to check any find out?)

I'm sorry for the troubles you experienced connecting to WyldRyde.

At WyldRyde, we have no tolerance for hate speech; we want everyone, regardless of their sexual preference, race, religion, etc to feel welcome and safe on our network.

But, unfortunately on an *hourly* basis intolerant teens and adults attempt to connect to the network with hateful and socially unacceptable nicks that incorporate the word gay in it. (e.g. yourg*y, g*yssuck, etc.) These hateful nicks are always used to troll, harass LGBTs, and/or to spread hate speech.

We've had this automatic ban in place for over 5 years and you're the first person to use a nick containing the word gay that has a legitimate usage.

I've adjusted the automatic ban to allow "Gayle". Again, I'm sorry for the troubles you experienced and this oversight.

This reminded me of when I tried to use "gatita" (Spanish for "little she-cat") as AIM screen name and I got a warning saying the screen name was restricted. I asked a friend what restricted means and he said it means you can't use the screen name because it contains a sequence of letters that spell a word that is unacceptable. He said that "gatita" was probably restricted because it contains the letters that spell out a certain slang term for the female breasts. No doubt that girls named Cassandra have had this problem with their name because of three certain letters in sequence in their name. Same with the last name Nishita. There is family in my hometown with that name.

I also wondered how what happened to you affected has people with the last name Gay or Gaye. I happen to know someone of in my hometown named Richard Gay. There is also a woman in my home town whose first name is Gayla. Yet another local in my town pronounces her first name "gay" but it's spelled Gae.
